Joe Barresi

Engineer/Producer

Joe Barresi is an American record engineer and producer who has worked with bands such as Kyuss, The Melvins, Queens of the Stone Age, Tomahawk, L7 and The Jesus Lizard. In August of 2005, he started working with Tool on their "10,000 Days" album after being recommended by Buzz Osborne of the Melvins. Joe also produced Bad Religion's "New Maps of Hell" album, released in July of 2007.

Barresi started playing guitar when he was 7, performing in local bands in and around his home in New York and in Florida. He studied classical guitar and music theory at the University of South Florida, later transferring to the University of Miami to study piano and music engineering. During this time, Joe logged many hours recording and developing local bands. After completing college, Barresi moved to Los Angeles and began working at numerous local studios -- a move that helped him gain an understanding of the different consoles, rooms and clientele. His first big break came when he engineered a demo for producer Garth Richardson. He then went on to work with a number of well-respected producers including David Kahne, Michael Beinhorn, Rob Cavallo and Sylvia Massy.

Eventually Barresi gained enough experience and insight to begin producing records. He has produced or co-produced tracks for Clutch, Buckcherry, Fu Manchu, Loudmouth, The Melvins, L7 and others. Barresi has also mixed tracks for Monster Magnet, Hole, Veruca Salt, Weezer, Bauhaus, Anthrax, Skunk Anansie, and Alpha Galates. He produced the debut album by Queens of the Stone Age, which at the time did not have a record deal. That album was eventually released by indie label Loose Groove. The self-titled album garnered attention from press (Rolling Stone named Queens of the Stone Age one of the ten most important hard & heavy bands of the year) and alternative radio (including KROQ) -- all of which contributed to the band landing a deal with Interscope Records.

"This mic [Amethyst Vintage] is an amazing discovery! It has all the detail you would expect with a condenser mic, yet it has a body and warmth that I love from tube mics. I first tried these on overheads and realized I didn't need U67's nor EQ anymore - just a great all around mic with amazing definition."

"I recently used the Amethyst Standard on guitars through some seriously distorted amps. I was surprised at how much I liked it. Normally I stick with a dynamic mic and shove it right in the speaker cone, but this mic on a 4x12 provided a clarity and body that helped make the guitars jump out of the speakers. It is also a fantastic mic for piano and acoustic guitars."

"The Globe Vintage is a great mic! In the past, I used it solely as a mono room in front of a drum kit, but now it has made its way closer to the kick, replacing my normal outside kick mic. The Globe Vintage has lots of gain, great body and fantastic bottom. I also recommended it on bass guitar for a big sound."

"I tried The Finger as a spot mic on a piano and it was truly unique - slightly darker and way more interesting than a normal pencil mic."
